TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
There are two things you should know about me right off the bat: I believe in repetition and long savasanas.
You will find a lot of repetition in my videos because research shows it takes multiple times for your brain to truly assimilate something into your body. Every time you repeat an action (yoga pose, stretch, workout, drinking water, etc) you are activating that particular circuit in your brain to help create a habit. My goal is to help you create the pathways in your brain to help you be stronger, more flexible, more centered, each time to take class. By repeating a sequence more than once in a class, you are giving your brain a chance to really understand what is happening so that you can deepen into the stretch, or hold the balance a little longer, or exhale a little more fully the second (or third) time around. Plus, whenever you come back to that pose or action again in the future, your brain will remember it and help you do it again. This is also why we call it a yoga practice. It is something you have to practice, or do repeatedly. One yoga classes isn't going to change your life. But once repeated, it most certainly can.

I also believe in long savasanas. Why you ask? Because we need it. How often to you really get the opportunity to lie down and have no responsibility to do anything other than breathe? Pretty much never, right? But if we are honest, that is also what makes it one of the most challenging poses. Turning your brain off enough to just be, for a few minutes at the end of your practice can be extremely challenging, but we need it more than we know. We need the time to help our bodies rest, reset and restore. Think about it like how when one of your electronics isn't working you turn it off and back on again. That is savasana for our bodies. So to me, taking the last 10 minutes of a yoga class for savasana is not wasted time. It is exactly what we need. Investing in stillness is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I am not saying it will be easy, and it will definitely take practice, but I encourage you not to skip that part. Don't fast forward to the end. Really dive into it. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you.

I also believe that yoga is for every body. Literally, every BODY. Yoga is meant to make you feel strong, empowered, grounded, full of life, creative, flexible, and so much more. Yoga is more than time on your mat, but the time on the mat is when we can really step away from all the other things in our lives and really focus on ourselves. I truly believe that what they say is true: you cannot pour from an empty cup. I think, especially right now, we all spend so much time taking care of others and our other obligations, that really caring for ourselves feels impossible. But if we are empty, what good are we at any of those things anyway? We aren't. Instead, what if we stood tall, like a vase, and let ourselves be poured into on a daily basis with whatever makes you the best version of yourself and then let the excess overflow out the top? What if we cared about ourselves enough to do that? What if you could hop on your mat for 20-30 minutes (or more!) without leaving the house? Without getting out of your pjs? What if you could come home and decompress before making dinner with a quick stretch? What if during quarantine, you could take care of yourself during nap time with a 30 minute hip opener?
